PEACE NEWS & DEMONSTRATIONS
Saturday demonstrations at various military recruiting
stations.
Join NCPG at the corner of
Bennets Rd. and Rte. 25A in Setauket.
The group has
been meeting resistance and threats from pro-war folks
who have labeled the corner "Coward's Corner." We will
reclaim the street, naming it "Resistance Row" or
"Bring the Troops Home Blvd." (kudos to Brian O.).
Bring your signs, bring your friends.
Note: The Bellport Women In Black will also be holding
their vigil on Saturday from 11-11:45 a.m. on the
corner of Station Rd. and S. Country Road. This group
has been harassed by a local fire dept. member,
Please come out in solidarity with either of these
groups. The occupation in Iraq is becoming such an
obvious failure it is hard to hide it even from the
corporate news. This appears to be making die-hard
bush followers as defensive as possible. Your support
is needed and appreciated.
See you Saturdays...
In Peace,
Karen

NO NUKES! NO WARS!
End War Profiteering! Support Indigenous Rights!
ACTION IDEAS
Based on your group's capacity and background, you could organize anything:
* marches
* civil disobedience
* citizen’s inspections
* events that promote the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Commitments Act
(H. Res. 373) (http://www.august6.org/hr_373)
* teach-ins
* educational events
* outreach.
You might want to organize a bus trip to one of the larger regional events, or a
protest at a nuclear power plant that Bechtel built
(http://www.august6.org/whereis_bechtel) or at another nuclear profiteer’s
facility or office (http://www.august6.org/war_profiteers), such as BWX
Technologies, Lockheed Martin or Raytheon.
We especially encourage civil disobedience and nonviolent direct action. Let’s
use our people power to confront key pillars of war and empire -- including
corporations like Bechtel. Be sure to list the activities that you are planning
on the august6.org calendar: http://www.august6.org/add_event.
At the 2004 World Social Forum, Arundhati Roy called on people to identify and
locate the offices of Iraq war profiteers “in every city and every country across
the world” and “go after them.”
(http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/dinamic.php?pagina=arundhati_2004_ing) She
continued, “We could shut them down. It’s a question of bringing our collective
wisdom and experience of past struggles to bear on a single target. It’s a
question of the desire to win.”
WE CAN WIN
Recently, the Western Shoshone Nation and its supporters helped to postpone
indefinitely the “Divine Strake” simulated nuclear test explosion at the Nevada
Test Site that could have exposed people who live downwind from a dust cloud of
radioactive particulates. Indigenous resistance in Cochabamba, Bolivia, forced
that government to cancel Bechtel’s contract after the company privatized
Cochabamba’s water systems and sent prices skyrocketing. In San Francisco,
activists helped to defeat Bechtel’s plans to privatize water in their hometown.
WHO WE ARE
This call was initiated by the UFPJ Nuclear Disarmament/Redefining Security
Working Group in collaboration with an ad hoc coalition of local and regional
groups organizing August 6-9 actions.
Our efforts are intended to complement the United Nations’ International Day of
the World’s Indigenous People (Aug. 9 --
http://www.un.org/depts/dhl/indigenous/); Global Call Iraq’s call for civil
resistance to end the Iraq occupation (Aug. 6-9 --
http://www.globalcalliraq.org/); the War Resisters League’s “Stop the Merchants
of Death” campaign and its upcoming conference on war profiteering (Sept. 29-Oct.
2 -- http://www.warresisters.org/smod/smod_hp.shtml), United for Peace and
Justice’s Nuclear Disarmament Campaign
(http://unitedforpeace.org/article.php?type=71&list=type) and No War on Iran
Campaign (http://www.unitedforpeace.org/iran), and growing efforts to link the
anti-nuclear, anti-war, anti-corporate globalization and indigenous rights
movements around common themes. We also hope to build momentum for the September
21-28 week of resistance to end the occupation of Iraq:

Palestinian-American playwright Betty Shamieh, and
accomplished Israeli-American jazz pianist Liz Magnes for
an evening of culture and performance to benefit the children of Al Rowwad.
Live in Chappaqua, New York at the Horace Greeley Auditorium
For more info go to
www.wespac.org
Al-Rowwad Cultural and Theatre Center is dedicated to the training of
children in Aida Camp-Bethlehem to help them overcome the repercussions of
military occupation. As an independent, non-governmental organization, the
center also offers educational and cultural programs which promote human
rights.
In addition to their work in Palestine, Al Rowwad has toured theatres in
Europe and North America. These tours bring to the confined children the
invaluable experience of traveling to foreign lands, while educating
international audiences about the realities of life in the occupied
territories.
"Theater is a powerful tool of expression. It allows the children to manage
and release all the anger, frustration, and pressure they live under, and to
deliver their message in a peaceful, nonviolent, and civilized way. It also
shows them how educating themselves in different fields is vital, and that
they can't build their country by fighting in the streets."
-Abdelfattah Abu-Srour,
Director of Al-Rowwad and the first Palestinian recipient of an Ashoka
Fellowship (2006-2009) acknowledging “system changing solutions for the
world’s most urgent problems.”
